French Exam Tutoring: Prep for Every Major French Test

One-on-one French exam tutoring matched to your test, your level, and your timeline.

Passing a high-stakes French exam takes more than general practice. It takes a French exam tutoring approach built around your specific test, its format, its scoring, and what separates a good score from a great one.

Dr. Melissa Kerley, who holds a Ph.D. in French from Tulane University and has taught French for more than 30 years, personally matches every student to a tutor based on their goals, background, and learning style. Every tutor is a native French speaker, personally vetted by Dr. Kerley, from a team spanning 15 Francophone countries across 5 continents.

Every session is one-on-one over Zoom and built around your level, your target score, and your timeline. Want to compare this with the rest of the site first? Explore all of our online French tutoring programs.

French Exams We Prepare You For

DELF and DALF

The DELF and DALF are French language certifications issued by France’s Ministry of Education. They are recognized worldwide and never expire. The exams cover six levels, from A1 to C2.

University admission, immigration, and professional certification often require a DELF or DALF score. Our tutors prepare candidates for all six levels with focused coaching across reading, listening, writing, and speaking. Learn more about our DELF and DALF exam preparation program.

AP French Language and Culture

The AP French exam is given by the College Board every May. It tests reading, listening, writing, and speaking. A score of 4 or 5 can earn college credit at many universities.

Our tutors practice every task type on the exam with your student. That includes source-based essays, simulated conversations, cultural comparisons, and timed email replies. Students walk in confident and ready for the format. Explore AP French exam prep with native-speaking tutors.

IB French B (SL and HL)

The IB French B exam tests reading, listening, writing, and speaking at both Standard Level and Higher Level. Higher Level students also face literary analysis and a harder oral component.

The exam connects to five IB themes: identities, experiences, human ingenuity, social organization, and sharing the planet. Our tutors build these themes into every session and focus on the skills IB examiners reward most. Ready to prepare for IB French? Tell us your goals and we will match you with the right tutor.

TEF and TCF

The TEF and TCF are French proficiency tests used for Canadian immigration, Quebec residency, and French citizenship applications. These tests are scored on a scale, not pass or fail. Every point counts.

Our tutors know the scoring bands and what it takes to hit the CLB levels immigration programs require. We prepare students for every section, including the speaking and writing portions many candidates underestimate. Have an immigration deadline? Tell us your timeline and we will build a prep plan around it.

FSI French

The FSI French test is the benchmark for U.S. government employees, diplomats, military personnel, and intelligence professionals. It uses the ILR scale. The speaking and reading sections demand precision and a professional register far beyond everyday fluency.

Our tutors coach the formal register, structured argumentation, and professional scenarios FSI evaluators look for. We have helped foreign service officers pass when their careers depended on it.

French Placement and Graduate Exams

Some universities and graduate programs require French placement tests, departmental proficiency exams, or reading-knowledge exams for Ph.D. programs. The formats vary, but the goal is always the same: prove your French is strong enough.

We prepare students for university placement tests, departmental exams, and graduate-level language requirements. Your tutor learns the format of your specific test and drills the skills it measures.

Praxis II French

The Praxis II French exam is required for teaching licensure in many U.S. states. It tests listening, reading, and writing alongside knowledge of how French language and culture are taught.

Our tutors help candidates prepare for the full scope of the exam, including the skill sections that determine whether you earn your teaching credential. If you are not sure which test fits your goal, tell us what you are preparing for and we will help you sort it out.

How Our French Exam Tutoring Works

No matter which exam you are preparing for, our approach follows the same five steps:

Diagnostic assessment. Your first session starts with an honest look at where you stand. Your tutor tests your skills across every section of the exam and identifies exactly where the gaps are.

Exam-specific drilling. We do not teach generic French and hope for the best. Your tutor works through the exact question types, task formats, and scoring criteria of your specific exam. If it is on the test, you will have practiced it.

Timed practice under real conditions. Before your exam date, we run full-length or section-level practice tests that match the real format and timing. You get detailed feedback on every section.

Strategy and pacing. Time management trips up even strong candidates. We teach you how to budget your minutes, focus on high-value sections, and stay composed under pressure.

Honest progress tracking. Your tutor gives you straight feedback on where you stand and what still needs work. We would rather adjust the plan than let you walk into an exam underprepared.

Every tutor is a native French speaker, personally vetted by Dr. Kerley, from a team spanning 15 Francophone countries across 5 continents. Every session is one-on-one over Zoom and scheduled around your availability.

Frequently Asked Questions About French Exam Prep

Which French exam should I take?

It depends on your goal. If you need a diploma for French university admission or citizenship, the DELF or DALF is usually the right choice. For Canadian immigration, the TEF or TCF is often required. U.S. government professionals may need FSI certification. High school students usually focus on AP French or IB French. If you are not sure, tell us your goals and we will help you figure it out.

How far in advance should I start preparing?

Most students benefit from 2 to 6 months of consistent preparation, depending on their current level and target score. Some exams, like AP French, have a fixed date, so earlier is better. Others, like the TEF or TCF, can be scheduled when you are ready. Your tutor will give you a realistic timeline after the first session.

Can I prepare for my exam entirely online?

Yes. All sessions happen one-on-one over Zoom. Online preparation is just as effective as in-person coaching and much easier to fit into a busy schedule. You can work with our tutors from anywhere.

What if I do not know my current level?

That is exactly what the diagnostic assessment is for. In your first session, your tutor evaluates your skills across the tested areas and identifies where you stand. From there, we build a plan that targets the gap between your current level and the score you need.

Do you provide practice exams and study materials?

Yes. Our tutors use authentic and exam-aligned practice materials for each test we prepare students for. You will work through real question types, timed practice sections, and targeted drills matched to the format and scoring criteria of your exam.

How much does exam preparation cost?

We offer several session packages to fit different timelines and budgets. Visit our pricing page for current rates, or reach out for a free consultation and we will recommend a package based on your exam, your timeline, and your preparation needs.
