Why Adults Learn French

Adults come to French for all kinds of reasons, and most of them overlap. Maybe a work assignment in Brussels sparked the idea. Maybe a retirement trip to Provence made it urgent. Maybe you studied French in college and want to pick it back up.

Whatever your reason, you’re not alone. French is the fifth most spoken language in the world and an official language of 29 countries.

The challenge for adult learners isn’t motivation. It’s finding instruction that respects your time. Cookie-cutter apps and group French classes for adults weren’t designed for people with careers, families, and full lives. Dr. Kerley builds your plan around your goals and works backward from there, so every hour you spend learning French counts.

What Drives Our Adult French Learners

Travel and Cultural Confidence

A few phrases from a guidebook won’t get you far in a Lyonnaise bouchon or a Marrakech souk. Real travel French means asking for directions, reading a menu, holding a conversation with a local, and handling the unexpected without reaching for your phone.

Your tutor will design a focused plan around the vocabulary, listening skills, and conversational confidence you’ll actually use on the ground. Whether your trip is six months away or six weeks, every session will get you closer to traveling with real confidence.

Career and Professional Development

French opens doors in diplomacy, international business, development work, and more. It’s an official language at the United Nations, the EU, NATO, and the International Olympic Committee.

Our professional-track sessions focus on real workplace skills: leading meetings, writing emails, presenting to French-speaking clients, and reading cross-cultural situations. If you need French for a specific industry or role, your tutor will build sessions around the vocabulary and scenarios you’ll face on the job.

We also offer French tutoring in Washington DC for professionals in the diplomatic community.

Personal Growth and Lifelong Learning

Not every goal needs a deadline. Many of our adult students learn French as an adult because they love the language, the literature, the cinema, or the challenge.

Learning a new language keeps your mind sharp and connects you to a culture that has shaped the world. Your tutor will build sessions around your interests, whether that’s reading Le Petit Prince in the original, following French news, or finally watching Truffaut without subtitles.

Family and Heritage Connections

Maybe your partner’s family speaks French. Maybe you’re adopting from a francophone country. Maybe your grandparents spoke French at home and you want to reclaim that part of your identity.

Language is personal. When the motivation is family, it matters more. Our tutors know how to support learners who are building or rebuilding a connection to French through family. They bring cultural awareness and patience to every session.

Exam Preparation and Certification

Some adult learners need a credential. A DELF (Diplome d’Etudes en Langue Francaise) B2 for French citizenship, a TCF (Test de Connaissance du Francais) for Canadian immigration, or a certification for a graduate program.

We prepare students for the DELF, DALF, TCF, and TEF with tutors who know the formats inside and out. If certification is part of your plan, your tutor will build targeted exam practice into your sessions from day one. Learn more about our DELF and DALF preparation program.

We also offer AP French exam prep for high school students taking the Advanced Placement test.

Who Our Adult French Lessons Are For

You’re in the right place if you’re:

  • A complete beginner who has never studied French and wants a structured, patient start
  • A rusty returner who studied French years ago and wants to rebuild what you once knew
  • A travel planner preparing for a trip and wanting practical, conversational skills
  • A working professional who needs French for a new role, a promotion, or daily communication with francophone colleagues
  • A lifelong learner studying French for the joy of it, with no deadline and no exam
  • A heritage speaker who understands some French from family but wants to build reading, writing, and grammar skills

Unlike group French classes for adults, our sessions are entirely one-on-one.

If you’re looking for help for your child, we also offer French tutoring designed for teens.

What Adult Learners Say

Adult learners come to us with different goals, but they often share the same worry: can I really do this? Here’s what that experience has looked like for other adults.

I came to Dr. Kerley after almost a decade without French practice. Within a few weeks, my French had improved more than it had since college. It was worth every second.

Kyle, adult learner returning to French

Barbara came to us preparing for a foreign service language exam. Dr. Kerley matched her with a tutor who could support that goal with structure, accountability, and exam-focused practice.

I highly recommend Dr. Kerley and her team to anyone looking to improve their language skills or prepare for language exams. Their professionalism, expertise, and personalized approach truly make a difference in achieving language proficiency.

How Our Adult French Lessons Work

Our approach is simple: start with your goals, build a plan, and adjust as you go.

Free consultation. Every new student starts with a free conversation. We learn about your goals, your experience with French, if any, and how you like to learn. This is a conversation, not a test.

Dr. Kerley matches you to your tutor. Based on your consultation, Dr. Kerley personally selects a tutor for you based on your goals, background, and learning style. No algorithms. No random assignments.

Your tutor builds your plan. Your tutor designs a curriculum around your level and goals. Beginners might focus on pronunciation, core grammar, and survival vocabulary. Intermediate learners might work on conversation or professional communication. Advanced learners might refine their argumentation or prepare for an exam.

Live one-on-one sessions over Zoom. Every lesson is a live session with your tutor. You get real-time correction, spontaneous conversation practice, and the accountability of working with someone who knows your strengths and weaknesses. Sessions run 60 minutes and are scheduled when they work for you.

Ongoing progress tracking. Your tutor tracks your progress and adjusts the plan as you improve. If something clicks fast, you move on. If something needs more time, you slow down. The goal is steady, visible progress.

You can also tell us about your goals and we will help you decide what kind of lesson plan makes sense for your schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions About Adult French Lessons

I’m starting from scratch. Can I still take lessons?

Yes. Many of our adult learners begin as complete beginners. Your tutor will start where you are, not where a textbook expects you to be. The goal is steady confidence, not pressure.

I haven’t studied French since high school. Is it too late to start again?

Not at all. Many of our adult students are returning to French after years away. You’ll be surprised how much comes back once you start. Your tutor will assess where you are and build from there, so you’re never starting from zero even if it feels that way.

How are lessons structured?

Each lesson is a live, one-on-one session with your tutor over Zoom, typically lasting 60 minutes. Your tutor plans each session based on your goals and progress, blending conversation, grammar, vocabulary, listening practice, and cultural context. There is no fixed textbook. Your tutor selects and creates materials based on what you need.

How often should I schedule lessons?

That depends on your goals and availability. Most adult learners meet with their tutor once or twice a week. Consistency matters more than intensity. Your tutor will recommend a cadence during your consultation.

Do I need to buy any materials?

No. Your tutor provides all lesson materials. If a grammar reference, a reader, or a podcast would help, your tutor will recommend specific options. There is no required textbook purchase.

Can I switch my focus partway through?

Absolutely. Life changes, and your lessons can change with it. If you started learning French for travel but now need it for work, your tutor adjusts the plan. Flexibility is one of the biggest advantages of one-on-one instruction.

What if I’m not sure which level I am?

That’s what the free consultation is for. We will have a conversation with you, as much as you’re comfortable with, and help assess your current level across speaking, listening, reading, and writing. You’ll leave with a clearer picture of where you stand and what a realistic plan looks like.

How much do lessons cost?

Pricing depends on lesson frequency and program length. Tell us about your goals during your free consultation and we’ll walk you through your options.
