What Is the AP French Exam?
The AP French Language and Culture exam is a College Board exam for advanced high school students, testing reading, listening, writing, speaking, and cultural understanding. A strong score, usually a 4 or 5, can earn college credit, though policies vary by school.
Starting with the May 2027 exam, AP French moves to the Bluebook digital testing app, paper exams are discontinued, and students need a wired headset with a microphone. The exam is now built around a course project and authentic sources.
Section I: Free Response (65 to 70 minutes, 50%)
- Project Presentation: a prepared 3-minute talk on the course project topic, published in January of the exam year.
- Project Q&A: four recorded follow-up questions about your project presentation and research.
- Argumentative Essay: an essay using three sources, print and audio, to support a clear position in French.
Section II: Multiple Choice (80 minutes, 50%)
- Listening: 25 questions in 40 minutes, using audio and related materials.
- Reading: 30 questions in 40 minutes, using articles, charts, literary texts, and promotional materials.
Course Project and PPR
Before exam day, students submit a Personalized Project Reference (PPR) through the AP Digital Portfolio by April 30, then use it on exam day for the Project Presentation and Q&A.

Starting with the May 2027 exam, AP French moves to Bluebook. The revised exam includes a course project, a Personalized Project Reference submitted by April 30, a Project Presentation, a Project Q&A, an argumentative essay, and listening and reading multiple-choice questions.
Most colleges give credit or advanced placement for a 4 or 5. Some accept a 3, but policies vary by school. Check your target university’s AP credit page. We prepare every student to aim for a 4 or higher.
Start as early as you can. The Course Project Packet drops in January and the PPR is due April 30, so a longer runway means more time for project and speaking practice. Students with a solid foundation often need 8 to 12 weeks, but we work with students at every stage.
Yes, but planning matters more now. Exam-only and fall-semester students still need AP Classroom and AP Digital Portfolio access for the course project materials and PPR submission. Your tutor helps you build a clear plan around those requirements.
